BAYOU BLUE, LA (FOX44) — A 20-year-old man was arrested for holding a woman hostage, prompting a nearly three hour standoff with law enforcement.
“[He] was wanted by Louisiana Probation and Parole due to a probation violation,” Brennan Matherne, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “[He] eventually surrendered himself…and was found to be armed with a shotgun which was not loaded and no ammunition was found.”
It all started on Monday, Sept. 23 at roughly 1:00 p.m. Deputies were contacted by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office regarding a possible armed gunman who was allegedly holding a woman against her will in a home located in Bayou Blue, La.
“The Lafourche Parish Interagency Crisis Management Unite was also deployed to the scene and quickly also confirmed the identity of the subject,” Matherne said.
Negotiators began talking to the suspect, Paul Sampay of Houma, and confirmed that a female was being held against her will inside the home. A nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown during the standoff as a precaution.
“Deputies charged Sampay with Domestic Abuse Battery after learning about an incident last week involving the same female victim. Due to conflicting statements from Sampay and the victim, deputies are continuing their investigation into Monday’s incident to determine if Sampay will face any additional charge.”
Sampay was booked into the Lafourche Parish Jail. His bond was set at $2,000. He is being held for additional charges in Terrebonne Parish.
Sheriff Craig Webre applauded the efforts of all responding agencies.
“Our newly-formed Lafourche Parish Interagency Crisis Management was once again up to the task in this situation,” Sheriff Webre said. “CMU members from every agency in the parish were able to respond quickly to the scene, and in the end, our negotiators were able to convince the subject to surrender. A peaceful end to any standoff is a major success because it not only prevents the subject from taking his own life or the lives of others, but it keeps our officers out of harm’s way.”
