Man arrested for trying to walk into State Capitol with a BB rifle
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — The Louisiana State Police reports that Russell W. Vaughn, 32, carried a riffle to the top of the steps on Wednesday, June 19 at roughly 11:15 a.m. When security approached him, he refused to drop the weapon and eventually fled the area.
A security officer was able to get the rifle before he ran away. They determined that it was actually a BB pellet gun.
Vaughn was taken into custody this morning on unrelated charges. Reports indicate that those charges were for Simple Assault and Disturbing the Peace. He was arrested by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
State Police received a tip that Vaughn was connected to the incident at the Capitol. He was questioned about the incident and he made “incriminating statements to investigators.”
Vaughn was charged with Resisting Arrest. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
The Louisiana State Police is responsible for security at the State Capitol. They say they are reviewing their current security measures.
