An Amite man has been arrested after accidently burning down his home while he tried to make meth.

On June 11, the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Amite Fire Department to assist in a fire investigation that occurred on Old McMichael Road in Amite.

Because of the nature of the explosion and a strong suspicious odor, the TPSO Narcotics Unit, the Tri-Parish Narcotics Task Force and the La State Fire Marshal joined in the investigation.

Authorities questioned the homeowner, Jacob Cruse, 35, and he confessed that he was attempting to manufacture methamphetamines via the one-pot method when a catastrophic failure occurred. This failure resulted in an explosion that caused the entire structure to burn down.

On June 25, Cruse was arrested and charged with Simple Arson and Operation, Creation and Possession of a Clandestine Lab.
