Man gains second DWI for driving lawnmower down road at night without headlights
HOUMA, LA (FOX44) — A 60-year-old man was arrested for his second DWI after a police officer nearly crashed into him. That’s because he was driving down a road on a riding lawnmower shortly after midnight.
The Houma Police Department reports that the incident happened on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The officer was patrolling in the area of Barrow Street near the power plant when he nearly hit the lawnmower. The officer noted that the lawnmower was not illuminated in any way.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and spoke to the driver, Edward Duke. He believed Duke was intoxicated, so he issued a field sobriety test. After performing poorly, Duke refused to take a chemical test for intoxication.
Duke was arrested and charged with DWI. The officer later learned that he had an outstanding warrant for his first DWI, which was issued in New Mexico back in 2007.
Duke is charged with DWI (second offense) and Operating an Unsafe Vehicle. He was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Jail.
