BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — A Baton Rouge mother was arrested after her 2-year-old was found walking on Florida Blvd. The woman admitted to leaving her two children at her place of employment because she had to go to her second job.
According to the arrest report, the Baton Rouge Police Department was dispatched to the 6200 block of Florida Blvd on Tuesday, Oct. 1. A witness reported seeing a toddler walking alone in the roadway shortly before 9:00 p.m.
At roughly 11:30 p.m., the officer learned that the child’s sibling was located in a nearby business. The 8-year-old child was sleeping at the time he was discovered.
The officer was able to make contact with the mother, Nancy Thomas, 32. She explained that she owned the business where she left her children, and locked them inside before leaving.
“She advised that she had to go to another place of employment,” the report noted. “[She] stated that her sister was enroute to pick the kids up, but was running late…she did not want to be late for her second job.”
Thomas said she left the children inside the building at 5:00 p.m. She said she continued to call her sister after she left, but was unable to reach her by phone.
Although Thomas claims this incident was the first time she’s been forced to leave the children alone, her 8-year-old told the officer that it has happened “several” times in the past.
Thomas was arrested and charged with Child Desertion (2 counts). She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Her bond was set at $20,000.
