BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — The mother of an 11-month-old child was charged with Second-Degree Cruelty to a Juvenile after an autopsy revealed that the infant died of blunt force trauma.
The Baton Rouge Police Department launched the investigation after the child, Aaliyah Heard, was brought to the hospital with critical injuries. The infant was pronounced dead on Saturday, June 22.
An autopsy completed during the early morning on Monday, June 24, revealed the child died from blunt force trauma to the head. The coroner also noted that there were various bruises and abrasions that were in various stages of healing.
After completing an investigation, officers arrested Ashley Heard, 28, with the death of her child. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
This is the third trauma related homicide of an infant to occur in East Baton Rouge Parish during 2013. This is the first case, however, where the charge was not First-Degree Murder, and it is the first case investigated by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
