Mother, grandmother arrested for battery of teen boy over paycheck
THIBODAUX, LA (FOX44) — The mother and grandmother of a 17-year-old boy were arrested for domestic battery after they allegedly attacked the boy over a paycheck. Officials say evidence at the scene painted a vivid picture of the events that transpired.
“Police officers were able to collect photographs of the scene and the victim’s injuries and statements, which lead to the arrest of the mother and the grandmother,” David Melancon, Thibodaux Police Department, said. “After looking at the evidence of the case, police officers on scene made the decision to arrest based on the facts. All of the evidence will come out in court.”
It all started Wednesday, Aug. 14 shortly before 2:00 p.m. when officers were dispatched to a home on Notre Dame Street. An anonymous caller reported that there was a disturbance at the home.
“When police arrived they found the male victim,” Melancon said. “His shirt was torn from the neck down, which was consistent with someone grabbing it and pulling it down. He was bleeding from his nose and mouth area, and it was dripping down his face. He also had multiple fresh markings on his back. Police officers also found blood splatter inside of the home.”
The victim’s mother, Mona Richard, 44, and grandmother, Bonnie McDowell, 64, told officers that the teen suffers from nose bleeds.
From interviews with the victim and witnesses, officers learned that the dispute started when the teen tried to leave the home. Richard and McDowell allegedly confronted the teen about his paycheck, which he refused to hand over.
“They grabbed him and held him inside the home as they began to strike him repeatedly,” Melancon explained. “Bonnie, the grandmother, grabbed a metal spoon and hit the victim in the face. When officers arrived on scene, the spoon was being used to stir a pot as if nothing had happened.”
Nothing happened is exactly what Richard and McDowell are claiming. Both have protested the charges from the beginning, and Richard took to Facebook to deny the allegations.
“I am a taxpaying citizen with no type of records,” Richard posted on the Thibodaux Police Department’s Facebook page. “I will be handling this system with our attorney. Me and my 64 year old mother were treated like murders and animals in their custody. So believe and comment what you want, the truth will prevail.”
Richard was charged with Domestic Abuse Battery. McDowell was charged with Domestic Abuse Battery and Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. Both were booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center.
