A Baton Rouge Police Officer is recovering from moderate injuries after he was drug for a short distance by a suspect’s vehicle.

Officials say the incident began at roughly 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8. We’re told the officer was patrolling in the 2100 block of O’Neal Lane when he noticed a suspicious vehicle parked behind LA Capitol Bank. When the vehicle spotted the officer, it left the area and moved to a nearby gas station and the officer followed him.

It was at this point that the officer approached the suspect. He began asking him questions, to which the suspect allegedly appeared nervous to answer. The officer then approached the vehicle and noticed what looked like illegal drugs in plain view. It was at this point the suspect allegedly took off running.

The officer chased the suspect across the street, then back to the gas station where the suspect is said to have gotten in his vehicle. In a last-ditch effort to detain the suspect, the officer reached into the vehicle. However, the suspect continued to accelerate and the officer was knocked to the ground and drug for a short distance.

EMS treated the officer at the scene. BRPD says he sustained moderate injuries, but is expected to recover.

Officers are currently tracking down the suspect with the information the officer collected before the chase. They did not provide any details relative to the suspect’s identity or a description of the vehicle.
