CHARENTON, LA (FOX44) — Update: Detectives have charged 48-year-old Wilbert Thibodeaux of Charenton with two counts of 1st degree murder, two counts of attempted 1st degree murder and one count of arson. Thibodeaux is being held in the Iberia Parish Jail.
The deputies remain in stable condition at hospitals in Lafayette and New Orleans.
The case remains under investigation.
Original: Two deputies and a police officer were shot this morning when responding to a call of a man walking down the road with a shot gun in St. Mary Parish.
The Louisiana State Police is currently investigating the incident, which happened around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26. on 10000 block of Flat Town Road in the town of Charenton.
Officials tell us officers from the Chitimacha Police Department and deputies from the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and the suspect opened fire. The officer was pronounced dead at the scene. One deputy was transported to a hospital in Lafayette, and the other was taken to a hospital in New Orleans. We’re told they are both listed in critical condition.
Meanwhile, a nearby mobile home was on fire. Firefighters arrived on scene first and extinguished the fire. Once it was out, the body of Eddie Lyons, 78, was discovered inside. Detectives believe he was shot by the suspect prior to the fire.
“Today is a difficult day for our partners in St. Mary Parish,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies and the officer’s families tonight. I know the coming days and weeks will be difficult ones for the men and women of the Chitimacha Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office. We will assist their agencies in anyway we can during these trying times.”
The State Police report that the suspect, Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, was apprehended after he was shot during the gunfire exchange. He was treated at a local hospital and is expected to recover.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
