Quiet community park shaken by shooting
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — A shooting at a usually quiet community park has officials with BREC looking into security there.
Pam Reams often takes her young grandchildren to play at the Flannery Road Park.
"I’ve taken my children and my grandchildren, been there for birthday parties, and the grandkids have played there," said Reams.
That’s why it was so shocking to her to learn that same park had turned into a crime scene Tuesday night after a man was shot there three times.
"I haven't had any problems at that park, that's why I am shocked to hear that something has happened at this park because it's a really nice area. I am just shocked," added Reams.
The man was allegedly shot after playing a game of basketball with friends.
"A man came in and he told one of our employees that he'd been shot in the leg, and they did exactly what they should have done. They called police, and they got him the medical attention he needed," explained Cheryl Michelet, Communications director at BREC.
Police have said at this time there is no suspect or motive. BREC officials have maintained that keeping people safe is still one of their top concerns.
"We do have eyes around all of our parks to make sure everything is ok. At some parks where we have had incidents we do have cameras. In the spring and summer when you see a pick up in people who are going to the parks we work really close with law enforcement to do extra patrols," said Michelet.
Michelet said BREC officials will assess the security needs at the Flannery Road Park and could end up beefing up ranger patrols. BREC park rangers are responsible for patrolling 183 parks across the parish.
