belle chase, la (fox44) — A woman has been arrested for stealing over $100,000 from her former employer. She admitted to the theft and said she used the money to support her gambling addiction.
The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into the claims on Friday, May 24. The restaurant where the theft allegedly occurred is located off Highway 23 in Belle Chase.
During the investigation, Detective Aaron Verrette learned from the business owner that from July 2011 until June 2012, his former manager and personal friend, Kristen Carroll, 38, of Terrytown, was believed to have stolen cash deposits from the business during the nearly year time frame. She was responsible for collecting the cash payments from daily sales and preparing the daily deposits.
The owner claims that he became aware of the possible thefts in June 2012 after he checked the business deposits against the cash received. It was then that he discovered a significant amount of cash missing from the deposits.
Last June, the owner confronted Carroll regarding the missing money, during which time she admitted she had been stealing the deposit money to support her chronic gambling habit. She was immediately fired.
A forensic audit was conducted, which recently revealed that a total of $103,508.44 was stolen from the business.
Carroll was taken in for questioning on Friday, May 31. She allegedly confessed to taking the money for her gambling addiction.
Carroll was arrested for theft over $1,500.00. She also had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear on an arraignment for issuing worthless checks. Her bond was set at $25,000.
Officials say Carroll has a prior criminal record for drug related charges.
