BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Baton Rouge resident Jeff Conrad lives in the relatively safe Bluebonnet area of Baton Rouge. But even he's alarmed by the spike in crime in the Capitol City. And the stats back up his fear. According to numbers released by neighborhoodscout.com Baton Rouge ranks as the 66th most dangerous city in America. This includes more than 2,500 violent crimes.
"It's scary to think that that type of statistic that our city qualifies for that," states Conrad.
It's caused Conrad to try and stay away from north Baton Rouge as much as possible. That’s where Angela Allen has called home for the past 12 years. She lives on the corner of Alliquipa and Huron in the heart of the city's most dangerous zip code the 70805. And she says while the level of crime isn't low enough in her neighborhood.
"At one time we would hear a lot of gunshots," states Allen.
She does see progress because of programs like BRAVE.
"When you have the presence of the police coming around, it keeps a lot of the stuff that would go on. It keeps it from going on," says Allen.
But she says to get Baton Rouge off of the most dangerous cities list two other things have to happen. First,-abandoned homes need to be torn down or fixed up. Second, people have to take more pride in where they live.
"You have to be accountable for what you do in your neighborhood and what you allow to be done in your neighborhood," states Allen.
