BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — A 23-year-old woman was arrested for DWI after she allegedly hit two parked cars and a tree.
“Police were able to prevent what could have turned into a major incident involving serious bodily injury,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Baton Rouge Police Department, said.
The incident started shortly before midnight on Saturday, Oct. 5. It happened in a highly populated area of downtown Baton Rouge.
“Police observed a black Ford Mustang turn southbound from Florida Blvd. onto the sidewalk of Third Street and continue driving down the sidewalk against the flow of traffic,” Cpl. Coppola explained. “The driver then drifted off the sidewalk striking two parked cars before crossing Convention Street and hitting a tree.”
Because the area is a popular nightclub destination, police presence in the area is high.
“Almost immediately, police on foot and on bicycles surrounded the vehicle and prevented it from backing out and continuing forward,” Cpl. Coppola said.
The driver, Lynnsey Marie Herwig of Bossier City, got out of the vehicle and had presented signs of heavy intoxication.
“She had slurred speech, very poor balance and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages,” Cpl. Coppola said. “Herwig registered a Blood Alcohol Content of .262 percent on the Blood Alcohol test.”
Herwig was arrested and charged with DWI, Wrong Way Down a One-Way Street, Reckless Operation, and Hit-and-Run Driving (2 counts). According to jail records, Herwig was released the same day she was booked after posting a bond of $3,700.
