Cyclist killed from crash with vehicle in Avoyelles Parish
AVOYELLES PARISH, LA — A 57-year-old man was killed after he was struck by a car while he was riding his bicycle.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash happened at roughly 8:20 p.m. on Hwy 115 in Avoyelles Parish. The crash killed cyclist Richard Green of Bunkie, La.
Officials say Green was riding his bike in the northbound lane and attempted to cross the roadway. That’s when he was hit by a car being driven by a 31-year-old woman from Marksville.
Green was not wearing a helmet so he sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A routine toxicology test is being performed. The crash will remain under investigation pending the results.
Louisiana law requires that every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable.
Bicycle helmets are 85% effective in reducing total head and brain injuries. Bicycle helmets are the single most effective way to reduce fatalities due to head injuries. When wearing a bicycle helmet, make sure it fits snugly on your head and the clasp is locked.
