Downtown businesses say bring on the New Year's Eve crowds

Grab your party hat and streamer celebrating 2013 is almost here. Businesses in downtown Baton Rouge spent Sunday preparing for a boom in crowds Monday night for New Year's Eve.

Hundreds of people will pack the streets of downtown starting around 10:00 PM Monday night in hopes of hitting a few hotspots before the clock strikes midnight.

"People downtown for New Year's Eve is just like LSU playing Alabama," Sammuel Hemmings, manager Hotel Indigo, explained. "They are excited from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed."

Hemmings said many downtown hotels are sold out.

"Here just as staff wise they're going to be wearing party favors," according to Hemmings. "Everyone is just excited to be a part of the New Year's method."

Downtown business plan on raking in big profits this new years adding new specials and discounts to draw in crowds.

"There's a lot of parties downtown, so people have their options. We are looking for downtown to be pretty busy pretty alive," Hemmings said.

"Everybody's got their own little New Year's party, (they) put on champaign toast at midnight party favors things of that nature," Ryan Fairman, general manager Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar, revealed. "I think just the downtown environment is really conducive to that type of celebration. "

Fairman says crowds of close to 500 people could come into his establishment at any point throughout the night.

"We know it's a big night for us down here. We kind of elevate our staffing and everything to make it that we are ready for that crowd. We just try to make as big of an extravaganza out of midnight as we can for everybody," He said.

No matter where revealers plan on ringing in the new year make sure to party responsibly.

"It's one of those great nights. Everybody's got the next day off from work for the most part," Fairman described. "One of those nights where you can go out and let it loose."

"Grown ups having their college moment again," Hemmings explained, "I'm just going to leave it at that."
