Explosion leaves Morgan City without power

Wednesday, June 27, 2012 - 9:44am

Thousands of people are waking up in the dark in Morgan City after an explosion at the city's main power plant.

The fire at the Joseph J. Cefalu Senior Municipal Steam Plant is out, but it could be days before residents get their power back.

Morgan City Mayor Tim Matte has declared a state of emergency, and residents will have to abide by a dusk-dawn curfew until the problem is fixed to keep everyone safe.

Residents have been told to not waste water due to the sewer stations not working.

Witnesses say they heard at least one explosion at the Cefalu plant in Morgan City. Officials say a transformer blew up, but they don't have any idea why.

The plant was evacuated, and so far, there are no reports of any injuries.
