ExxonMobil’s Baton Rouge Refinery is responding to a small crude oil spill that happened early this morning.

The company says that less than five barrels were spilled in the water at its Mississippi River docks.

“The spill was detected early this morning and was immediately stopped,” a representative with ExxonMobil said in an official statement. “ExxonMobil promptly notified the US Coast Guard, LDEQ and all other appropriate agencies. Response efforts are being coordinated with the US Coast Guard.”

Response boats, boom and absorbent pads were deployed in an attempt to prevent the crude oil from spreading downriver.

“We regret that this incident occurred,” the statement continued. “Our focus is on addressing the incident and ensuring the situation is resolved as soon as possible.”
