East Feliciana, LA (FOX44) — Jarriet Boatner and his daughter Sandra Johnson woke Sunday morning to a gruesome sight.
"When my dad got up Sunday morning he discovered that the little kitten was hanging there in the tree, with the noose around his neck in the tree," Johnson said as she described the brutal scene that claimed the life of her kitten.
Johnson claims for years her father has been harassed, by who they're not sure, but this time she thinks those same people are trying to send them a message of hate.
"You come outside, you see your animal hanging from a tree with a noose around his neck that's serious, that's just serious and someone is trying to send a message," Johnson said.
Neighbor and close friend Roy Cook said he's never experienced the level of harassment Boatner has gone through, even though he only lives two miles down the road. Cook said there's no doubt in his mind this is a hate crime.
"He's being targeted yes very much so, and antagonized," Cook said.
Despite the traumatizing experience Johnson says it took days for a deputy to come to her father's home.
"You know somebody should have come out because it's getting to a point now where it's dangerous," Johnson explained.
FOX44 also checked in with the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office, they say they've received the report after a deputy spoke to Johnson on the phone, and they're taking this matter very seriously. At this time it's still under investigation.
"If the law can't help us, they can't get out here, they can't stop them. What are you going to do? Stand there and let somebody kill you," queried Cook.
Johnson said she's hoping by speaking out she'll find the person responsible for terrorizing her family.
"It puts fear in you, you come out and you have a little innocent kitten that's hung, noose around his neck. We don't know if somebody's going to kill us. We don't know what. It’s just frightening down in here."
After fox44 made calls to the sheriff's office Tuesday afternoon Johnson said a deputy was sent out to speak to them in person and photograph the scene.
