FIND Terrilynn Monette: Week two of continued search for missing school teacher

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 - 11:47am

Ten days have passed since a school teacher was last seen out for a night on the town with a friend from college. Now, her family, friends and students have turned to social media as a way to keep the search active.

Terrilynn Monette, 26, is classified as an endangered missing person. She was last seen at Parlay’s Bar in the 800 block of Harrison Avenue at roughly 3:30 a.m. Witnesses told police that she planned to sleep in her car because she had too much to drink and didn’t want to risk driving home. They also say they saw her talking to a man in the parking lot.

No one has seen her since.

Worry turned to fear when Monette did not show up to work on Monday morning. She teaches second-grade in Jefferson Parish, and was recently nominated as “teacher of the year.”

"She loves her students to pieces," said Monette's Aunt Sheryl Bennett.

With each passing day, anxiety among the community builds. Search parties have scoured areas, looking for clues that could help the case. Last week, a Facebook page was created to help push information to the public.

“NOPD says [her car] will have major clues to finding Terrilynn,” one post reads on the FIND Terrilynn Monette page.

The page has shared dozens of pictures of Terrilynn and has provided links to media reports that spotlight the latest developments.

Much of these efforts are all too familiar to Facebook users in south Louisiana. A year ago, a social media effort propelled the case for missing ULL student Mickey Shunick into the national spotlight. Today, many of the same organizations that aided in that search are now participating in the search for Monette.

The Houston-based group Equusearch has offered assistance to the New Orleans Police Department. The group is experienced in finding missing people and assisted in the search for Mickey Shunick. They also recently helped locate a man who fell in the Mississippi River in the New Orleans-area.

A donation account at Regions Bank has been established to help pay for the search effort. Contributions can be made at the physical location 3836 Elysian Fields Ave. New Orleans, or by mail to 831 Branch Dr., New Orleans, LA 70122. The page notes that a PayPal account has also been created, but they say it is not an official donation site established by the search party.
