French Settlement, La (FOX44) — As the Amite River recedes, residents affected by flooding are better able to see what damage was done to their property.
Neighborhoods around French Settlement were quiet on Wednesday, with few people out cleaning up their homes.
Some people said they were leaving the rest of the damage in place before insurance adjusters arrived, fearing that a clean home would hurt their odds of getting paid.
Entergy crews said there were still a handful of homes they could not reach because of flooded roads. But Livingston Parish President Layton Ricks said fewer than 500 people remained without power Wednesday afternoon. That's down from 60,000 without electricity at the height of the storm.
Residents who live along the Amite say they are concerned about the fish in the river. Some have started dying, and people say they expect a mass fish kill as the river level drops further.
