On Dec. 4, officers responded to an industrial area of Highway 30 near the Iberville/Ascension Parish line after reports that a woman had been robbed.

According to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Debra Bass, 37, of Geismar, stated that she pulled to the side of the road due to a flat tire when a white male struck her from behind.

Bass claimed that the man dumped the contents of her purse on the ground and stole her wallet and wedding ring set.

As detectives continued their investigation, they learned that Bass made up the robbery story and had actually sold her wedding rings to a pawnshop.

She also told police that she was on her way to a casino when her car caught a flat tire.

Bass admitted to the officers that she has a mental problem and a gambling problem for which she is currently seeking help.

She was issued a misdemeanor summons for one count of criminal mischief for false reporting of a crime.
