'Gold Medal Mom': Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes makes a visit to some local kids

Some youngsters in our area got a visit from an olympic gold medalist.

Former Olympic Gymnast Dominique Dawes got physical with dozens of kids from the Boys and Girls club of Greater Baton Rouge. It's part of the "Gold Medal Mom" sweepstakes. The woman who actually won the sweepstakes wanted to donate her winnings to the organization and remains anonymous.

As for the program, "Gold Medal Mom" focuses on healthy and active lifestyles for moms. Being a new mom herself, Dominique Dawes said it's important to be a good role model.

"I just birthed a baby not to long ago. I'm a new mom myself, so I'm excited to be back on the road. I know that you know being a mom it's so important that you're an example to your kid. We want to make sure these kids understand that they're good habits of physical activity starts now when they're eight years old, seven years old, when they're nine and ten. So they can continue it for the rest of their lives," Dawes said.

Dawes has retired from competitive gymnastics 14 years ago. She now co-chairs the President's Council on Physical Fitness.
