Friday, February 1, 2013 - 12:00am

The Kmart Pharmacy in Gonzales accidentally threw out files with personal information from its customers. Although officials do not believe this could create a safety breach, they do want customers to be aware of the error.

“We believe we have taken every step necessary to address this incident,” a release said.

We’re told the prescription files were thrown out on Jan. 2, 2013 in a secure dumpster, which was then transported to a local landfill. They say the files did not contain credit card of sensitive information. However, they did include the patients full name, address, date of birth, prescription number, prescriber, insurance cardholder ID and drug name.

“As soon as Kmart became aware of this issue, it was immediately investigated,” the release continued. “We have conducted a thorough review of our policies and procedures which are in place to safeguard our customers personally and health information and to ensure that we are rigorously following federal and state laws in handing this sensitive data.
