BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Jonathan Pannia stopped in to a Baton Rouge gun store shortly after noon on Wednesday, just over an hour after President Obama announced plans to form a task force to explore legislation to prevent tragedies like the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary.
"This is a team that has a very specific task. To pull together real reforms right now," stated the president.
Pannia said while he understands the point of the task force, the purpose of his visit was to buy a gun, before any laws are tightened.
"I understand the reason why it is changing, and I am actually ok with that, but also as you said it's a little bit easier now to get the gun now than it will be in the future. So just kind of keeping my options open," Pannia said.
Others browsing firearms alongside Pannia took a slightly harder stance on the issue of banning guns.
"I think the bottom line to me is, we send out men and women everyday to fight for freedom in this country. Yet our government is always trying to find ways to limit our freedoms. So I think they have a lot of soul searching to do up there on Capitol Hill," Charles Thomas, a gun owner, explained.
The president has already expressed his interest in banning certain types of higher powered firearms, and re-iterated the point Wednesday.
"A majority of Americans support banning the sale of military style assault weapons. A majority of Americans support banning the sale of high capacity ammunition clips," President Obama said.
Most people we spoke to said they are worried that guns like the AR-15 Riffle will be banned. But all the gun owners we spoke to Wednesday said it's not the tool itself that’s the problem, but the person behind the gun.
"If they want to tighten up who can get guns from a stand point of if you have mental issues, yeah I am for that," Thomas added, when discussing possible legislation to avoid another Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.
The president also pushed for legislation for better access to mental health, as well as other aids to the problem. He said the task force should have proposals for him by the end of January.
