Shortly before noon on Sunday, June 24, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L discovered a fatal crash scene along the Interstate 12 westbound off-ramp to LA 1249 / Pumpkin Center Road. The single vehicle motorcycle crash took the life of Daniel Reno, 51, of Hammond.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash took place between midnight and 2:00 am as Reno was traveling west on the off-ramp on his 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle. For unknown reasons, Reno ran off the left side of the off-ramp and continued off road for approximately 200 feet before impacting a tree and coming to rest. Reno was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was removed from the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Investigating Troopers suspect that rider impairment was a factor in the crash with the results of a toxicology exam pending. Speed is not considered a factor.

According to statistics from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, in 2011 motorcyclists were involved in over 1500 crashes across the state resulting in 67 fatalities. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Driver impairment continues to be a contributing factor in a large majority of fatal crashes across the nation and our state. By taking precautionary steps including never driving while distracted or impaired, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.

Troopers also urge motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels to take extra precautions while riding and ensure that they are properly prepared and trained for a variety of riding conditions. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices including: being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their bike.
