BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — A Kentucky teacher is on a mission to banish childhood obesity and get kids more active in the classroom.
Steve Stewart made his way to Baton Rouge armed with little more than a map and bike.
Stewart biked from Kentucky through several states and eventually to end the trip in Washington D.C.
He's made the trip in support of the Integrity Challenge. The group works to give kids more options to learn to exercise without having cutting into classroom time. Stewart says many schools minimize p.e. to maximize learning opportunities.
"They can't give up academic time there's too much accountability for teachers, as far as, academic test scores," says Stewart. "You have to find a way to implement the two or, it's never going to happen and we are going to just keep talking about it. "
Stewart's next stop is Jackson, Mississippi. Stewart says he plans to finish his 3,600 mile journey in a total of six weeks. Stewart is marking his journey on Facebook.
