Large donation helps food bank feed needy families

Monday, December 10, 2012 - 11:00pm

According to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank more than one in four Louisiana kids doesn't get enough to eat. That's a number Jerry Daigre couldn't ignore. That's why he and more than 30 other members of the Lakeshore Gardens Property Owners Association decided they were going to donate $2500 to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

"It's just an excellent way I think of contributing to a real good charity and we know when we give money to the food bank they're going to use it effectively,” says Daigre.

They'll officially make that donation on Saturday at the St. George Santa Parade. And the money is badly needed. Last month alone the food bank handed out more than one million pounds of food to needy families.

"Our community has been wonderful. It's been great to see the outpouring of love and compassion for families who are struggling," says Amy Sellers of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

And every dollar counts. For each one that is donated the food bank can provide seven meals and that means fewer people having to decide how they're going to make ends meet.

"You have seniors that have to decide between food or medicine during the month. This money will go help bring more food in and help the people and the families in need," states Sellers.

And Daigre hopes his donation starts a trend.

"I think the more people you get involved, the better it's going to be," states Daigre.
