Last day for Ascension Parish residents to apply for disaster food stamps

Wednesday, September 12, 2012 - 1:00am

Today was the last time people in Ascension Parish could apply for disaster food stamps.

More than 1,100 people made it out to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center on Tuesday to apply.

Many people said the process was a lot smoother than after Hurricanes Gustav or Katrina. However, not everyone though received the disaster food aid they felt they deserved.

"I just feel like it's a disaster,” stated St. Amant resident Amanda Clifton. “If you lost a freezer full of food - I'm not asking for it for every month - it's just to help you get back on your feet."

About 7,000 people in Ascension Parish applied to the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Program, D-SNAP, over the past week.
