Law enforcement officials urge parents to use sex offender location apps
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Trick or treating is starting all across the Baton Rouge area, and a big concern for parents, especially on nights like these, is where sex offenders are in the city.
Parents should know that there are free apps for your smartphones that provide information about sex offenders in the area. These apps include Sex Offender Search, Offender Locator, Find Sex Offenders, and many other apps.
The apps offer location data on sex offenders, and some even come with a map function, which is a great way for parents to know which homes to avoid.
There's also a state law that doesn't let sex offenders participate at all in Halloween. That means no masks and no handing out candy. They are also not allowed to keep their porch light on.
But even with all the precautions, police say that today parents still need to on guard when they're out on the streets tonight.
“Learn where the sex offenders are in the area they are trick or treating in,” stated Sgt. J.B. Slate with the Louisiana State Police. “If the parents see any offender participating on Halloween, they need to leave the area and contact the police as soon as possible.”
State Police, along with the Sheriff's Office and BRPD, said they'll be patrolling the streets, making sure kids stay safe and making sure that the sex offenders are behaving the way they're supposed to.
