Baton Rouge, LA (FOX44) — David Gray's singing voice was not going to get him far on X Factor. But with just four words, he became the show's biggest winner.
Gray proposed to his girlfriend, Lauren Waguespack, on the episode that aired Wednesday night.
Waguespack is an accomplished singer who studied to be a theater performer at Northwestern State, but put aside those aspirations when she met Gray soon after graduating. Gray convinced her to audition for X Factor by saying that he would sing, too. Producers at the New Orleans taping liked her voice, and their story, and let both of them sing in front of the judges (Simon Cowell, Kelly Rowland, Demi Lovato, and Paulina Rubio) at Lakefront Arena.
Gray's looks drew cheers from the crowd, but his performance earned him a quick exit. He mentioned, though, that he was there to support his girlfriend, and when she performed, the audience gave her a round of applause. Her song got mixed reactions, but before the judges could weigh in, Gray got on stage with her.
He said he didn't care what the audience or judges though, pulled out a ring, dropped to a knee, and asked her to marry him. She said yes, and they got a standing ovation from nearly everyone in the arena.
The judges voted not to keep Waguespack on the show, but she and Gray went backstage and celebrated with their friends and family, most of whom were surprised by the proposal.
Wednesday, the couple got to relive that emotional day. The hosted a party for dozens of friends and relatives. Afterward, Waguespack said she would need to go home and watch it again, because she was still too nervous and excited about everyone watching the episode that she could not take it in. But the ring on her finger is proof enough that a very stressful day ended perfectly.
