Local employers bring career opportunities to North Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — If you are looking for a job, the North Baton Rouge Job and Career Fair gives you a chance to show your skills every year. Hundreds of people gathered at Baton Rouge Community College to take advantage of the open career fair Thursday.
Sean Senko spent the last three years out of work because he was in jail. Now, he is 18 years old and looking for his first job. This career fair is his first step in the right direction.
"It will keep me out of trouble. It will give me something to focus on. As long as I'm focused on something, I won't be focused on doing something wrong. I'm trying to find me a job so I can get my life straight," Senko said. "It had a lot of good opportunities, and whichever one calls me first, that's the one I'm going to go to."
"I just want to have money to get my mom out from where she's living with right now. I just want to be somebody and show my mom I can do something before she passes away," Senko said.
More than 40 different organizations and educational groups came together to bring job opportunities to the north Baton Rouge community, and job seekers in the area say they are grateful.
"You might as well say elated because I didn't know there was so much opportunity because I've gotten turned down in the job field so much," Christopher said. "I didn't know about the different opportunities there were to get a job."
Lana Venable works for Exxon Mobil, and Venable said their goal is not just to offer career opportunities, train and educate the community as well.
"Everybody's trying to pitch in and provided a little something to make today fun. We've got a live radio remote going on. Just a lot of really fun and exciting things happening out here today," Venable said. "Everybody coming together today from north Baton Rouge doing good things."
Organizers also created a "Thinking Wall" where job-seekers could post feedback to improve next year's fair, along with their future career goals for everyone to see.
