Brandon Bass is a big man who wants to be a big inspiration for local kids.

Bass is holding a series of basketball camps around the area. He started Thursday at Pointe Coupee Central High School in Morganza, followed by another at Devall Middle School in Port Allen. He will hold another camp today at Capital High School in Baton Rouge from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The former LSU standout and current member of the Boston Celtics picked each location because of its significance in his life. His father lived in New Roads, so he spent time playing at Pointe Coupee Central as a child; he went to school at Devall when he was young; and he attended Capital High before enrolling at LSU.

"Growing up in the neighborhoods I grew up in, you think that being a successful person, like a athlete, or someone successful, was almost impossible," Bass said Friday. "And I want them to be able to touch me, and be able to see me, and know that it is possible."

Also Saturday afternoon, Bass will host a Back to School Giveaway. That will begin at 3:00 p.m. at BREC Progress Park, 2680 Progress Road, Baton Rouge.
