It's a first in the nation, and it's right here in Baton Rouge: A middle school under so much surveillance that a gunman would have little chance of escape. NBC 33's David D'Aquin shows us today's dramatic test run.
A terrifying scene. Armed men forcing their way into a school. They burst through the doors - all part of a drill. Then they shoot a student. Until now, police would have to trust their instincts to find gunmen like this, but, now, McKinley Middle in Baton Rouge is the first school in the country to install "Virtual Command Technology."
"It's just so much intelligence that, they receive up front before they even enter the building they know exactly where to go and what the problem is," explains a Fire Marshall. The school is now equipped with motion sensors and cameras. They all link up directly with police who can jump on their laptops, get a layout of the school, and look at live video from inside.
They know exactly what's happening - and where. Inside the school, several safe rooms, bullet-proof doorknobs, and locks. As soon as there's a problem, police find out. And they instantly see what's going on right inside the school.
But it isn't cheap. This cost taxpayers a little over seventy-thousand dollars. Strong security, a high price tag, and a system they hope they'll never have to use.
