Teenager Sexually Assaulted 6 Year Old on Bus, Both Attended Louisiana School for the Deaf

By Jon Fairbanks

New sex allegations have once again brought negative attention to the Louisiana School for the Deaf.

A teenage student has been suspended for sexually assaulting a 6 year old girl, who is also a student at the Louisiana School for the Deaf.

The numbers are staggering, since 2003 there have been more than 30 reported cases of student-on-student sexual acts at the school.  State officials are saying now is the time to make major changes.

Education officials say the latest sex act occurred on a bus, when the teenage boy locked himself and the girl in the bathroom and assaulted her.

The chaperone who was supposed to be watching the students has been fired.  And a complete overhaul at the school could be on the way.

Rene’ Greer with the Louisiana Department of Education says, “the school community is concerned.  We want to be able to ensure them that their students are safe and sound when they are in our care.”

The state is not just worried student-on-student assaults.  IN the past five years, seven school employees, including four teachers, have been accused of engaging in sexual acts with students.  The Department of Education is considered bringing new management on campus, making the school a charter school or opening other regional schools around the state.

Greer says, “We expect each and every child to be taken care of every second of the day and protected.  We can’t always do that, we need to create layers, not just one procedure, layers of procedures and policies.”

The Department of Education and State Police are still investigating this latest case.

The 6 year old victim has been taken out of the school and is now at home with her family.
