Lumber Mill Fire

By David D'Aquin

A big fire at a Mississippi lumber mill had East Feliciana firefighters scrambling Friday morning.  It all happened in Centreville, just north of the Louisiana-Mississippi border.

A major fire at a lumber mill in Centreville, Mississippi brings in firefighters from across Louisiana to put out the blaze.  It all started around 3:00 Friday morning.  Firefighters, calling for all the help they could get, as you can imagine, to put a hard to manage fire at a lumber mill, filled with sawdust.  The owners of Big River Lumber Company say they're thankful for all the help.

Alex Kirkland says, "You know, if we're back in 3 months that'll be great, but I really don't know."  No one's sure how the fire started.  "Fire Marshall is coming out to investigate and find out, but as of right now we don't know."

The company also has an operation in Livonia, but the mill in Centreville does a ton of work, "Around a 100,000 feet of logs."  And that's each month.  "We provide lumber to the oil industry, oil service industry, Marine and mat industry."

For now, employees of the mill will be out of work.  Company owners say they're happy no one was hurt and not everything is gone.  "Our debarker is still in tact and our gang saw, and some other things.  It's not a total loss, but it's significant.  But, we're gonna rebuild and be back, and it's unfortunate, but it happens."

14 people work out there and the owners say they plan to rebuild, but they don't know exactly how long it'll take them.

No one was hurt in the fire and the Mississippi Fire Marshal is still investigating.
