Baton Rouge, La — Coinciding with a sales boost from last month’s record Powerball jackpot as well as a Powerball jackpot win in Louisiana, the Lottery reported an increase in the total amount of draw-style winnings to more than $26.4 million in prizes won during drawings held in May. The Lottery also reported over $10.8 million in scratch-off prizes paid in May.
May’s draw-style game winnings included a $16.7 million Powerball jackpot annuity prize, two match-5 Powerball prizes worth $1 million each, 11 Powerball prizes of $10,000 and three Powerball with PowerPlay of $30,000 each. There was one Mega Millions match-5 prize of $250,000 and six $10,000 Mega Millions prizes. Also, the Easy 5 jackpot was hit three times in May for a total of $417,353 in winnings. Lotto winning tickets totaled $774,478. Pick 3 winning tickets totaled $2,247,200 and Pick 4 winning tickets totaled $1,156,800.
Easy 5 prizes totaled $590,156 with an additional $194,849 won in ezmatch prizes, an instant-win option available for an additional $1.
“More than 43,000 Power Play purchasers won a bonus total of $448,279 in addition to their regular Powerball prize,” Lottery President Rose Hudson said, “and more than 12,000 Megaplier purchasers won a bonus total of $188,556 in addition to their regular Mega Millions prize.” The Power Play option offers Powerball ticket purchasers the chance to increase nonjackpot-related prizes to a set amount, which ranges from $12 for matching just the red Powerball number to $2 million for matching all five white-ball numbers when they purchase Power Play for an additional $1. The $1 Megaplier add-on option multiplies nonjackpot Mega Millions prizes by a multiplier number of 2, 3 or 4 selected during the drawing.
In total, draw-style game winnings from drawings held in May were $26,455,076. Lottery draw-style game players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the winnings from those tickets.
In addition to $10,801,586 in scratch-off cash prizes paid during May, players also claimed $1,677,982 worth of free-ticket prizes. According to Lottery policy, scratch-off games are closed when all top prizes are claimed, and scratch-off players have 90 days from the official game closure date to redeem a winning ticket.
“We encourage players to sign the back of their tickets immediately after purchasing and to check them promptly after the drawing. Even if a ticket does not win the jackpot, it could have won another prize,” Hudson added.
