Making sure the elderly are prepared this hurricane season
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — People around the area are preparing for hurricane season, but local healthcare experts want to make sure you don't forget about your elderly neighbors and relatives when it comes to preparing.
Older people have more life experience and most times that's a good thing. But when it comes to evacuating or even preparing for the possibility, experts said sometimes that same life experience can work against some of our most vulnerable loved ones.
Adriann Griffith of Home Instead Senior Care knows what she's talking about too! she's worked with seniors in our community for a long time.
"Some times the aging community has a different mindset. They'll say 'I made it through Betsy. I made it through the storm of '47. I even made it through Katrina. I'm staying right here,'" Griffith said. "You truly just never know. Even with our technology and the amazing things that meteorologists can do. According to everything everybody said, It looks like it's going to be a quiet year, but it only takes one storm to disrupt that year."
That's why Griffith said it's important to make sure seniors are prepared this hurricane season.
"So it's the time to make the decisions and to gather the things that you need is not when the storms in the gulf and people are in line at Wal-Mart, it's very easy to put together a kit right now," Griffith explained.
Griffith calls it the "Emergency Go-To" kit.
"Something that's really important especially for seniors is an extra pair of glasses, extra hearing aid batteries. Those little things you don't think about it," Griffith said. "Water is so important. You should plan for gallon a day during an emergency situation. Medications, refills, keys, you want to know where they are when it's time to go home."
Griffith said for those taking care of their elderly loved ones, it's even more important to make sure everyone is on the same page.
"So that's another part of planning ahead is having a conversation with that senior before there's a storm in the gulf so that you can talk about options, talk about a place to meet, talk about what the really best decision is for that senior," Griffith said.
