Neighbors still shocked over fatal shooting in Hammond
HAMMOND, LA (FOX44) — People living near Bailey Drive in Hammond are in shock 30-year-old Brandon Simms was shot and killed in his home Monday. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office deputies say Simms woke up to the sound of his door being kicked in around 12:30 a.m. Monday. Then he and the intruder exchanged gunfire. Simms was killed. Tuesday people living in the neighborhood were still trying to process the situation.
"I was shocked. I was shocked it happened back here, because we don't really have no problem back here," Wayne Landry, who lives on Bailey Drive, said.
Landry and his family have lived on the street for seven years. He said it's a usually quiet area.
"We never had a lot of traffic," Landry said. "A lot of people didn't even know we was back here at one time."
When he heard the news he was shocked.
"Made me feel threatened. You know I was threatened for my kids for my family. For my family to live around something like this...," He said. "I didn't even know what happened till the next morning. Because, I was inside asleep."
Now Landry said he is doing things differently.
"Oh yeah, we're really checking thoroughly and we are keeping the kids out of harms way," He said. "And, we're thinking about moving to tell you the truth."
