BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Baton Rouge born and raised law professor, Democrat Chris Tyson has hopes of taking on a new job, as Secretary of State.
"The Secretary of State plays an important role in our economy and in a growing economy like Louisiana’s we want to be sure that there is efficiency and a business friendly atmosphere at the secretary of state's office," explained Tyson of his motivation to run.
It's Tyson’s first attempt at political office, but he said he is not too pr-occupying himself with taking on the man already in office, Republican Tom Schedler.
"I think that we can, through the secretary of state's office do more to increase access to promote the importance of engagement, both at the ballot box and beyond the ballot box," said Tyson.
Through a grass-roots fundraising campaign, Tyson has raised $90,000, in 90 days, a pleasant surprise to the political newcomer.
"This process is full of surprises and I suspect I have future surprises ahead of me and we're just taking every day step by step," said Tyson.
Schedler explained that he's not concerned about the newcomer taking his thunder.
"I think it's a classic, quite frankly, my record in conservative versus a liberal and I think that's how this race will be defined as far as the two opponents. I am up to the challenge and I've never lost an election and that's six or seven as I count them," explained Schedler or the race.
The election takes place next year in 2015.
