With the start of school just weeks away, parents are once again looking to equip their kids with everything they need to be successful. State and local leaders lent a helping hand with that process Saturday, at the Back to School Children’s Health Fair.

"We want to make sure that children are fully prepared for school, so we have everything from uniform vouchers, to back to school supplies. We also have our health agencies here," Tara Wicker, Councilwoman, explained.

"Many children come to school with so many different barriers. And we want to make sure they're encouraged to understand they can overcome any of that. And be able to get what they need for school for school here, to take them back to school," Patricia Smith, State Representative, went on to add.

Hundreds of parents took advantage of the opportunity, and found the tools and information they needed.

"Very important, they (the kids) need all the information they can get, all the help they can get," Mary English, a mother at the event, explained.

But it wasn't just free pens and paper that parents and their students took home, organizers hope they also understand just how important it is to be ready for the new school year.

"It’s really, really important for our children to understand the importance of education. The parents, for understanding and supporting them through their educational journey," Smith said.

The event, held at the River Center, was free and open to the public.
