An investigation by Louisiana State Police determined that 27-year-old Devin I. Hammond of Baton Rouge was killed after being struck by a pickup truck on Juban Road around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29.

The crash occurred as Ergin Reese, 39, of Denham Springs was driving Southbound on LA Highway 1026. Reese struck something, which he believe to be a garbage can, with the front, right side of his vehicle.

Reese stopped his vehicle and notified police. Troopers arrived on the scene and searched the area to find the object that Reese might have struck, but they were unable to find anything.

On Monday morning, shortly after 7:00 a.m., a pedestrian notified police of a body lying in a deep, overgrown ditch off of LA Highway 1026. The body was identified as Devin I. Hammond, 27, of Baton Rouge.

The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab was able to determine that Hammond was struck by Reese’s pickup the night before.

The investigation determined that Hammond, who was wearing dark clothing, was walking northbound partially in the roadway when he was struck by the pickup.

An independent eyewitness stated to Troopers that shortly before the crash, they observed Hammond walking northbound in the roadway along a dark section of LA Hwy 1026.

Reese was not suspected to be impaired at the time of the crash, and he was not cited in the incident.
