Prairieville is ranked as one of the top suburbs in America, according to a survey released by Coldwell Banker Real Estate.

The survey ranked the town in Ascension Parish second in the Top 10 Booming Suburbs. The main reason for the ranking is that the area is considered one of the fastest growing in the state.

“As America continues to bounce back from the recession, this ranking identifies suburbs that have shown strong economic growth since the recovery,” said Budge Huskey, president and chief executive officer of Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC. “These communities have the American ideals we love, the suburban dream intact and a population that is finding jobs at a better rate than the national average. That is the definition of a thriving community.”

The study ranked 1,500 communities based on 15-20 attributes. They include such factors as increased year-over-year levels in employment and unemployment percentages, access to suburban staples (grocery stores, banks, etc), proximity to good schools, commuting by car and community safety.

Prairieville has a population of 27,599 and has shown 60.0 percent growth since 2000. Of the 9,381 households in Prairieville, 84.8 percent are owned, 9.5 percent are rented and 6 percent are not currently occupied. The median age of homes in Prairieville is 9 years and 42.0 percent of the homes have been occupied by the same residents for more than 5 years.
