A property owner in South Baton Rouge is trying to figure out who would want to burn down his parents home. Arthur Thomas grew up in home in the 2200 block of Maryland Street. Now his family home is ruined.

"It's not livable," Thomas said.

Overnight he got the news about the fire.

"I was on my way getting ready to go to bed," Thomas described. "My neighbor called and said my house is on fire."

Thomas' nephew was living inside the home at the time. Thomas says he is grateful his nephew made it out alive. Most of Thomas' family stuff was destroyed.

"Memory or things in the house were destroyed. Those things that we can't replace," He said.

Baton Rouge Fire Department investigators suspect the fire was caused by arson.

"Hope that they find the persons that... did this and also help clean up the area of the crime," Thomas said.

Firefighters said the fire started in the back of the home and went on to destroy most of the house.

"It hurt basically because it's something that my parents worked so hard for to live and provide for us," Thomas stated. "... it's just a very difficult situation hat someone would decided to do something like that. "

Thomas hopes someone will come forward to help his family.

He said:"If someone knows anything or have any idea who may be doing these type of things then bring them to justice. Then we can get the community back together to doing the things we need to do."

Call Crimestoppers at 225-344-STOP(7867) if you know anything that could help investigators.
