Rock One movement awards two recipients with high fashion surprise

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 - 2:54pm

BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — A new movement hopes to bring joy and a little high fashion to those recovering from cancer.

Anthony Ryan Auld surprised two women this morning at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge. Emily Perino and Mary Kathryn Rodrigue they are the first benefactors for his Rock One movement.

Being a cancer survivor himself, Anthony Ryan started the campaign with the hope of uplifting those directly, and indirectly, affected by cancer.

“Essentially the Rock One movement was really created to empower people who are cancer stricken through fashion, specifically, but also those who were directly it where indirectly affected.”

Kathryn Rodrigue is the Director of the Survivorship Program at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and she was selected as a recipient not only for the work she does, but she also had a personal battle, too. Her husband passed away not long ago after struggling with cancer. Although she helped Anthony Ryan set up the surprise event for Perino, she had no idea he planned to surprise her as well.

“I'm just honored that he even considered me in that category it's amazing," Rodrigue said about the surprise. “This whole sense of renewal and being able to be given an opportunity to just find a new purpose and my is amazing

Each recipient will get a full make over experience of their choice, and Anthony Ryan plans to do what ever it takes to make it work.

“To be able to take them a shopping trip or create them a garment - if that's the case – or a styling trip – it’s all something very personal for me. This is a very hands-on movement,” Anthony Ryan explained.

"It's going to be come in handy,” Perino said when asked how she felt about the award and what she hoped to gain from it. “I plan on returning to work in a couple months so I would love to get some more clothes for work."

Each recipient is awarded $1,000. All the funds are tied into ticket sales for the first ever Baton Rouge Mode Fashion week, which is set to be held on April 24-28.

The Rock-One Movement along with plans for MODE Fashion Week began back in December with a KickStarter account. Click here to see that story.
