BATON ROUGE,LA(FOX44) — State lawmakers want to help protect Louisiana residents avoid another sinkhole situation. This comes after Bayou Corne residents were forced to evacuate their homes in August because a sinkhole formed.
The House Committee on Natural Resources approved two bills to protect people who want to buy or already live near salt domes.
House Bill 494 would require property owners tell any potential buyers that the home is over a salt dome.
The other, House Bill 493, would give the state more control over solution mining companies and enable it to enforce fines if problems like the Bayou Corne sinkhole were to arise.
State Representative Karen Gaudet-St. Germain (D-Pierre Part), authored the bill. She says salt domes sit underground across the state not just in Assumption Parish.
"Absolutely positively any area around a salt dome that has the little availability of information that this one had is in the same corridor of the unknown," St. Germain said.
The full house is expected to vote on both bills some time next week.
