WALKER, LA (FOX44) — Some people in Walker woke up this morning to a big surprise and some big drops in their bank accounts.
Michelle Smith is mad at the Cracker Barrel gas station on Walker Road North.
"This is not the way you do business. They need to help people out with this," Smith said. "It turns out that Cracker Barrel has not been charging us for the gas for the past two months and decided last night to take all the money out at once."
Which means, Smith and others in this area woke up to negative bank accounts.
"So to be hit with that all at once, it's going to be life-altering to some people. Some people won't be able to pay their bills," Smith said. "We're fortunate enough that we had a savings account that covered it, but I understand when I was younger and living pay check to pay check, there's no way I would have been able to recover from this kind of charge."
Hilda Sasser and her husband use this gas station. She's happy it didn't happen to them, but it could have.
"Well they need to fix the problem because a lot of people live on a fixed income, and a lot of people out here in the country, we're not used to having a lot taken out at one time," Sasser said.
Customers are not the only ones feeling the hit.
"Employees even stated that they were also effected. They seem to be doing the best that they can," Smith said.
A Cracker Barrel employee said it's all because of a network problem and cards weren't being debited for the past three to six months.
"I feel like that company has some responsibility to let us know," Smith affirmed. "I think the corporate office should be held accountable."
I did reach out to corporate, but we haven't heard from them yet. An employee says they are working on it as fast as they can, and they apologize for the inconvenience.
