Super Bowl traffic helps Baton Rouge airport show off its benefits

Monday, February 4, 2013 - 5:53pm

For years the Baton Rouge Airport has worked to brand itself as a better alternative to New Orleans. Today they gained the chance to make that message known to thousands of Super Bowl fans who are heading home.

“Way easier. This is an easy airport,” a passenger told NBC33 News. “Easy in. Easy out. We stayed in a nice hotel for a decent price rather than a cheap hotel at a crazy price.”

Although the lines today were longer than usual as all of the 1,700 seats available were booked, the good news was that there were no major delays or cancellations. Passengers were pleased, and airport officials say that’s the best outcome possible.

“For every day business travelers and leisure customers and certainly people from out of town who may be visiting frequently - we want them to have a good experience and think highly of us,” Jim Caldwell, Baton Rouge Airport representative, said.

Caldwell also notes that a smooth day at the airport helps the economy for the entire city. He says the next big test for the airport is Mardi Gras. This weekend another massive influx of passengers is expected.

In New Orleans the number of passengers was exponentially higher. Roughly 42,000 people passed through its doors today. The airport reported had to increase the number of screening lanes from 14 to 25.
