Suspected 'chemical odor' forces closure of schools, Hazmat investigating

Saturday, February 9, 2013 - 2:00am

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System said a chemical leak in the Scotlandville area has forced the closure of Crestworth Elementary School, Crestworth Learning Academy and J.K. Haynes Elementary School.

Officials tell us the students who have not been picked up by a parent have been taken to the Recovery School District office located at 4055 Prescott Road. The students are being provided lunch. Parents of students who ride the bus will be transported home at their regularly scheduled time if a parent cannot pick up early. For students who walk or ride home, parents are asked to call the Recovery School District office at (225) 239-7500 no later than 5:00 p.m.

There’s no word on the exact location of the leak or what chemical is being released. A representative with the Baton Rouge Fire Department tells NBC33 News that there is a strong smell of gas in the area. Spokesperson Robert Combs said the same odor was reported yesterday. There’s no word on an exact location of the odor.

DEQ, Hazmat and Entergy are currently on the scene. Entergy reports they've responded to more than 60 gas leak calls, which they classify as "very unusual."
