A 61-year-old man from Thibodaux was killed in a head on crash after he attempted to pass an 18-wheeler on LA 3127.

The Louisiana State Police reports that the incident happened on Monday, Nov. 26 at roughly 2:00 p.m. We’re told Jerry Erwin, 61, attempted to pass an 18-wheeler. Erwin entered the southbound lane of LA 3127 at the same time a 2000 Freightliner being driven by Arthur Wilson, III, 61, of Plaquemine was approaching.

Both vehicles swerved to avoid colliding. However, they eventually struck each other head on in the shoulder of the road.

Although Erwin was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, he was severely injured. He was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Wilson was not injured in the crash.

A toxicology test is being performed to determine if alcohol is a factor in this crash.

Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
