Tuberculosis testing in Lafayette expands as possible exposure links widen

Friday, December 14, 2012 - 11:00pm

The Office of Public Health announced today a plan to add two elementary schools to the tuberculosis tests that will be conducted next week.

On Monday, Dec. 10, the department received notification of a possible case of tuberculosis at Lafayette High School. Today, they have included Truman and Alice Boucher Elementary Schools to the list for testing.

Officials say no additional cases have been reported. However, they have learned of possible exposure, prompting the testing.

"If we identify that someone was exposed, there's actually medication that we can give people. They take it by mouth for several months and it actually helps to prevent them from ever developing TB disease," Tina Stefanski, Regional Administrator and Medical Director, said.

The testing will be conducted on Monday, Dec. 17 and Tuesday, Dec. 18. Over 200 individuals will be tested for the disease.

Officials say individuals can also contact their regular doctor or health care provider to have the test administered. All schools undergoing testing will continue with regular class schedules.
